Paladino’s upstate base

21 Oct
By STEPHON JONHSON and AMITY PAYE

Already, it’s been quite the ride for Carl Paladino.

And while the Buffalo businessman and Tea Party favorite has become the butt of national jokes and is an embarrassment for many Republicans statewide, his reputation is a mixed bag for those associated with his upstate alma maters, St. Bonaventure University and Syracuse University.

Paladino graduated from St. Bonaventure, located in the western part of the state between Olean and Alleghany, in 1968, and while there was connected to the school’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (or ROTC). He went on to Syracuse Law School, where he graduated in 1971. (more…)

Key forgotten congressional races in New York State

By STEPHON JOHNSON and CYRIL JOSH BARKER Amsterdam News Staff

While the gubernatorial race has drawn a significant amount of attention, congressional races in New York State are just as important as anything you’ll find involving Andrew Cuomo, Carl Paladino, Charles Barron or Jimmy McMillan. Running as the Democratic candidate for New York’s 23rd District, Bill Owens is battling Republican Matt Doheny down to the wire on Election Day.

The 23rd District includes parts of Plattsburgh, Watertown, St. Lawrence, Clinton, Essex, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, Franklin, Fulton, Madison, Oneida and Oswego. (more…)

Debate debacle

21 Oct
By HERB BOYD Special to the AmNews

Asking students on Hofstra’s campus in Hempstead, Long Island, about the debate and its location was almost as daunting to them as a question on statistics. Many of them had no idea what the lost reporters were seeking or what debate they were talking about.

The same may be said for several of the panelists during the gubernatorial debate, if it can be so defined. Far too often, it was a debacle, a charade or, as Blue Magic once sang, “Let the sideshow begin.” (more…)

The debate that wasn’t

21 Oct
By CYRIL JOSH BARKER and By NAYABA ARINDE
Talking loud and saying nothing is a phrase some armchair and professional pundits alike are using to describe last Monday’s gubernatorial debate. Little was gained or learned, “unless you appreciated the comedy of it,” State Senator Bill Perkins told the AmNews.

To call Monday night’s event a gubernatorial debate would be an overstatement, considering the fact that the candidates vying for the governorship barely spoke to each other but, rather, answered questions about what they would do if elected governor. (more…)

Fulani espouses the mantra of ‘two good choices’

Tuesday at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem, Dr. Lenora Fulani held a news conference to recommend what she felt were the two best choices for New York State governor. Recommending Freedom Party Candidate Charles Barron and Andrew Cuomo, who is also running on the Independent ticket as well as Democrat, Fulani felt that these two candidates would advance independent politics and “Black empowerment.”

As a founder of the Independence Party of New York, Fulani has promoted the political entity’s causes for two-plus decades. Looking for another option for politically minded Black folks, Fulani believes that the key to challenging the current two-party dominance is investing in independence. “It is a vehicle to challenge the partisan and corrupt self-interests of the state’s Democratic and Republican parties and bring reform to our judicial system, which is so desperately needed,” said Fulani.

Black vote crucial to stopping conservative takeover in 2010

It’s been a trying year for the Democratic Party, one where even their collective achievements have been dampened by public relations disasters. Despite Democrats’ fright at the thought of losing seats in Congress to the Republican Party, there are several groups that can help them sustain their power if they can get them to the polls.

One of those groups? Black folks.

All over the country, Black voters have a chance to make a significant impact in major elections. From Senate races in Kentucky, Nevada and Missouri to gubernatorial races in Georgia, Florida, California, Pennsylvania and Ohio, the Black vote could be the key to Democrats holding down the fort come November. But does that mean candidates, incumbents and newcomers alike will alter their message to cater to Black voters? (more…)

Now that we have your attention, Mr. Cuomo…

Finally, it looks like there might actually be a real campaign.

It seems as though Andrew Cuomo has finally gotten the message that he has to actually engage the electorate and show us that he is actually worthy of our votes. We have been speaking loud and clear for some time now, and it looks like he has started to listen. We have been trying to tell him that we want someone to vote for, not simply someone to vote against.

And last week, Cuomo actually came to Harlem, took some time to shake hands and talk to our folks and open up a dialogue with our community. This is a good first step, but we can only hope this is just the first step in addressing the issues and concerns of Black people, who will be vital for either his electoral success or defeat. Wall Street Journal: Harsh Critique of Cuomo

27 Sep

By JACOB GERSHMAN

The head of a black-owned weekly newspaper based in Harlem said Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo has “proved nothing” to African-American voters and takes their support for granted.

The publisher and editor-in-chief of the Amsterdam News, Elinor Tatum, vented her frustration with state’s the attorney general in a strongly worded open letter in the newspaper published on Thursday.

“You have remained silent. You have met with no one. And I mean no one. You have not spoken to us or any other media outlets, for that matter,” Ms. Tatum wrote. “You seem to think that you are the golden child who cannot be touched, but I am afraid, my friend, you may be sorely mistaken.” (more…)

Village Voice: Andrew Cuomo and Black Voters — The Key to his Father’s Victory, Will They Help the Son?

Having set the national stage for the Carl Paladino roll-out yesterday, with CNN citing the Times as their reason for interviewing him, the paper did a nosedive today on the Siena and Marist polls that rebut the Quinnipiac numbers that were featured in a front page story the day before.

The Times barely mentions Siena and ignores Marist, though Marist’s 19-point lead for Cuomo is based on likelies, just like Quinnipiac. Polls are snapshots, but how does the Times explain featuring the out-of-focus one on A-1, and then refusing to balance it out with a full slideshow today?

One photo the Times did get right was the one on its inside page yesterday, an artful portrait of Cuomo addressing fenced-in reporters near City Hall. All we see are the outstretched hands of reporters bearing mikes, separated by iron links from the gesturing candidate. It captures the essence of the Cuomo error so far — too much staging and manipulation, too much calculation and distance.

Elinor Tatum captured a bit of the gap in an eloquent open letter in the Amsterdam Newstoday. (more…)

Times Union: Amsterdam News asks Cuomo if he’s running

Elinor Tatum, the publisher and editor of The Amsterdam Newspublished this stern letter to the Cuomo campaign saying he has not reached out to the minority community, and hasn’t spoken to the state’s oldest African-American newspaper since 2002.

“You have remained silent. You have met with no one. And I mean no one,” Tatum wrote. “You have not spoken to us or any other media outlets, for that matter. You seem to think that you are the golden child who cannot be touched, but I am afraid, my friend, you may be sorely mistaken.”

Cuomo’s campaign has been subjected to criticism for not reaching out extensively deeply into the African-American community. The campaign began doing so last month, but has yet to publish the promised “Urban Agenda” volume of Cuomo: The Books. (more…)
