As the midterm elections press forward the highly anticipated gubernatorial debate next Monday – 18 Oct., is being dubbed as not only a political showdown – but also free ad time for candidates other than Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Carl Paladino.

But rather than a quaint show and tell session for Cuomo and Paladino, they will share the stage at Hofstra University with the five other candidates looking to grab the governorship: including Charles Barron of the newly-formed Freedom Party, Howie Hawkins of the Green Party, Libertarian Party candidate Warren Redlich, Jimmy McMillan of the Rent is too Damn High Party, and Manhattan madam Kristen Davis of the Anti-Prohibition Party. A Paladino warning

As the clock continues to tick and the weeks become mere days, we look and see what we really have as our candidates for governor of this great state of ours. Over the past few weeks on this page, we have looked at Andrew Cuomo and what he must do to garner the vote of the Black community. We have talked about Charles Barron as an option, but we have also said in no uncertain terms that we will not support Carl Paladino for governor, and now it is time to tell you why:

“I’m not politically correct, and I don’t want to be!” That is what Palidino has said to NPR and anyone else that will listen to him. While some may feel he is a free spirit, there is more to it than just being politically incorrect. There is something to say about sensitivity to people and the way in which politicians interact with their inner circle and the public in general. Citizens want someone to represent them who has at least a modicum of decorum and shares at least some of the same values. (more…)

Fulani espouses the mantra of ‘two good choices’

Tuesday at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem, Dr. Lenora Fulani held a news conference to recommend what she felt were the two best choices for New York State governor. Recommending Freedom Party Candidate Charles Barron and Andrew Cuomo, who is also running on the Independent ticket as well as Democrat, Fulani felt that these two candidates would advance independent politics and “Black empowerment.”

As a founder of the Independence Party of New York, Fulani has promoted the political entity’s causes for two-plus decades. Looking for another option for politically minded Black folks, Fulani believes that the key to challenging the current two-party dominance is investing in independence. “It is a vehicle to challenge the partisan and corrupt self-interests of the state’s Democratic and Republican parties and bring reform to our judicial system, which is so desperately needed,” said Fulani.

Black vote crucial to stopping conservative takeover in 2010

It’s been a trying year for the Democratic Party, one where even their collective achievements have been dampened by public relations disasters. Despite Democrats’ fright at the thought of losing seats in Congress to the Republican Party, there are several groups that can help them sustain their power if they can get them to the polls.

One of those groups? Black folks.

All over the country, Black voters have a chance to make a significant impact in major elections. From Senate races in Kentucky, Nevada and Missouri to gubernatorial races in Georgia, Florida, California, Pennsylvania and Ohio, the Black vote could be the key to Democrats holding down the fort come November. But does that mean candidates, incumbents and newcomers alike will alter their message to cater to Black voters? (more…)

Now that we have your attention, Mr. Cuomo…

Finally, it looks like there might actually be a real campaign.

It seems as though Andrew Cuomo has finally gotten the message that he has to actually engage the electorate and show us that he is actually worthy of our votes. We have been speaking loud and clear for some time now, and it looks like he has started to listen. We have been trying to tell him that we want someone to vote for, not simply someone to vote against.

And last week, Cuomo actually came to Harlem, took some time to shake hands and talk to our folks and open up a dialogue with our community. This is a good first step, but we can only hope this is just the first step in addressing the issues and concerns of Black people, who will be vital for either his electoral success or defeat. Paladino’s “racist” politics

Carl Paladino stunned the state’s GOP when he won the Republican gubernatorial primary earlier this month. Now, he’s stunning the nation with his toxic tongue full of venom and denunciation of Black and poor people, to say nothing of his e-mails laden with racism and pornography.

With apparently no limits to his wacko demeanor, Paladino has even shared e-mail images of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle, portraying them as a pimp and a prostitute. While the candidate has apologized for these “misjudgments,” as he termed them, it still leaves a question about his judgment as a potential state leader. (more…)

The race for governor has finally started to heat up.

Last week, AmNews publisher and Editor in Chief Elinor Tatum lit a fire under the campaign with her editorial titled, “Andy, are you gonna to run a campaign?”

“You have remained silent. You have met with no one. And I mean no one. You have not spoken to us or any other media outlets, for that matter. You seem to think that you are the golden child who cannot be touched, but I am afraid, my friend, you may be sorely mistaken,” Tatum wrote last week. (more…)

About the same time Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was announcing his urban agenda in Harlem in a closed session with several Black elected officials and community leaders on Monday, Councilman Charles Barron was delivering his urban agenda plan in Brooklyn.

In an interview a day after his press conference, Barron, who is running for governor on the Freedom Party line, spoke in detail about his plan. (more…)

Wall Street Journal: Harsh Critique of Cuomo

27 Sep

By JACOB GERSHMAN

The head of a black-owned weekly newspaper based in Harlem said Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo has “proved nothing” to African-American voters and takes their support for granted.

The publisher and editor-in-chief of the Amsterdam News, Elinor Tatum, vented her frustration with state’s the attorney general in a strongly worded open letter in the newspaper published on Thursday.

“You have remained silent. You have met with no one. And I mean no one. You have not spoken to us or any other media outlets, for that matter,” Ms. Tatum wrote. “You seem to think that you are the golden child who cannot be touched, but I am afraid, my friend, you may be sorely mistaken.” (more…)

NYTimes: Cuomo Facing Criticism From Blacks

27 Sep
By NICHOLAS CONFESSORE Published: September 26, 2010

Andrew M. Cuomo faces discontent among black elected officials and community leaders who say Mr. Cuomo has ignored them during his campaign for governor and is offering black New Yorkers little reason to rally to his cause, endangering his prospects for November.

In interviews, the officials raised numerous concerns about Mr. Cuomo, the state attorney general and a Democrat who has in the past had uneasy relations with New York’s black political establishment. He has done virtually no campaigning in predominantly black neighborhoods in New York or with black elected officials, they said, and has offered no major initiatives aimed at minority New Yorkers, spurring worries that black voters will stay home in November.

Some were rankled that Mr. Cuomo refused to take a stand on legislation enacted this summer that prohibits the New York Police Department from keeping records on people questioned during street stops but not arrested or fined. (more…)
