Next Tuesday the nation can participate in the general election—and in theory choose the candidate who is best willing and able to satisfy the interest of the public good. It is, of course, all a matter of opinion and perspective, with hundreds of candidates, incumbents, propositions and side issues up for consideration.

With the primary elections wrapped up, the politicians that made it through are revving up their campaigns, but one thing is even more important than knowing who the candidates are, and that is registering to vote.
Although you can register to vote throughout the year, the deadline to register is 25 days before the next election. That means if you are sending your voter registration in by mail, you must have it postmarked by October 8—that’s just two weeks away. (more…)

New voting system causes mess, distrust among voters

As New York State uses new voting machines for the first time in decades, the primary election was an experiment for machines that had mixed reviews.
On Tuesday, voters were introduced to new way of casting their ballot by using paper ballots rather than lever machines. While many had no problem getting their vote counted, others across the city complained of late openings at poling centers, malfunctioning machines and not-so-helpful poll workers.
In Harlem, while the majority of people who voted had few problems, some appear to have distrust for the new system. (more…)

New York’s Tea Party darling, Carl Paladino, may have done the Democratic Party a huge favor.
In what many have considered a shocking turn of events, the Buffalo businessman captured the Republican nomination for governor of New York State after defeating Rick Lazio by a margin of 62 to 38 percent with 98 percent of the precincts reporting. Paladino, surrounded by enthusiastic supporters in Buffalo, spoke of reforming Albany for those who are “mad as hell” with the “status quo.”
“Tonight, the ruling class knows,” said Paladino. “They’ve seen it, now. There’s a people’s revolution. I want everyone who opposed me in the Republican Party to know this: you’re welcomed to join the people’s crusade. Come aboard. You’re both welcomed and needed. If we unite, we’ll win. We’ll rebuild New York.”
